So far this year, at least 63 people have been killed in tornado-related incidents. The annual average of tornado-related deaths is 71.

Tens of millions of people are in the path of the severe weather, which could bring thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes overnight into Wednesday.

The community in Sullivan, Indiana is reeling after an EF-3 tornado carved a destructive path through the area. Residents now face another severe weather threat Tuesday, with the mayor saying recovery will take years. NBC News’ Jesse Kirsch has the details.

Images have emerged of some of the tornadoes that devastated communities across parts of the South and the Midwest as the death toll rises. The FEMA administrator described the magnitude of the band of storms as “historic.” NBC News’ Emilie Ikeda reports.

Wynne, a city in Arkansas’ northeastern Cross County where 4 people died, saw widespread damage from the storm system, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a tweet.

Storm chasing has for decades been a valuable way to study tornadoes in an effort to understand what it takes to create these intense rotating columns of air.

Reports of tornadoes have come in from Illinois to Arkansas. This map will be updated frequently Friday.

The trip is planned for Friday, a week after tornadoes ripped through Mississippi, killing 25 people.
